Powerful Solar Flare Triggers Geomagnetic Storm Watch

Powerful Solar Flare Triggers Geomagnetic Storm Watch

Strongest Storm in Years Forecast

Updated: 6:30 PM PDT May 10, 2024 (AP)

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which monitors space weather, has issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch due to an unusually powerful solar flare. The flare, which was captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory on Thursday, has triggered a surge of high-energy particles that are expected to blast Earth.

Solar flares are caused by explosive bursts on the Sun, which release high-energy particles into space. These particles can interact with Earth's magnetic field, causing geomagnetic storms. Depending on the strength of the storm, it can cause a variety of effects, including disruption to satellites and power grids, as well as the production of aurora borealis, or northern lights, at lower latitudes.

The forecasted storm is expected to be the strongest in years. NOAA has issued a G3 watch, indicating a "strong" storm. G3 storms can cause minor damage to satellites and power grids, and can also disrupt radio communications.

While the storm is not expected to cause any major damage, it is important to be aware of the potential effects and take precautions to protect critical infrastructure.
